First sponsor of event lined up

The Grand Island Alumni Association and Grand Island Central School District Athletic Director Jon Roth have announced the first sponsor of "Friday Night Under the Lights."

Pete Hayes, Class of 1974, has signed on as a gold sponsor for the event, which will herald the opening of the new Gene Masters Field at Grand Island High School. The ongoing capital construction project includes a new football stadium, complete with new turf, new seating, new scoreboard and lights.

"Friday Night Under the Lights" will be on Friday, Sept. 19, at Gene Masters Field. The festive evening will begin at 5 p.m. with a gathering of old friends, classmates and players from the past 50 years. There will be raffles, commemorative shirts and refreshments. Game time is 7 p.m. and retired Athletic Director David Meyers is scheduled to preside over the honorary coin toss.

The Vikings will take on Williamsville South in the first night game in Grand Island history.

Sponsors are being sought to cover expenses and the proceeds will go to the "Gene Masters Scholarship" fund, the GIAA Scholarship fund and a fence wrap to cushion the top fence bar where the standers/fence-leaners congregate to watch games.

Sponsors will have their names featured in all advertising including a banner that will be featured at all home games in 2014, the event program and announcer shout outs.

See the GI Vikings Facebook page for more information. Call or email Dick Crawford (716-818-6992, [email protected]), or Chris Aronica (716-510-8302, [email protected]).
