Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, today helped co-sponsor and pass legislation, A.9288, which creates a low-interest loan program for aspiring young farmers.

Currently, the average age of a farmer in New York is 59. In order to preserve the state's agricultural economy, Ceretto said the state needs to help transition farming to the next generation. He views this loan program as a way for young farmers to overcome the high costs of buying lands and acquiring the capital necessary to start in the farming business.

"Agriculture is a key part of the Niagara County economy," Ceretto said. "Towns like Wheatfield, Lewiston and Cambria could greatly benefit from a program that helps young farmers transition into the business.

"This program expands opportunities for young people in a tough economy, and I hope it is signed into law so that the aspiring young farmers of our area take advantage of it."
