Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue will give Western New York dog lovers what they've been waiting for: a family-friendly event where they can bring their dogs to enjoy friendship, camaraderie, lawn games and fun together.

The animal rescue invites their adoptive families and the public to bring their dogs (on a leash) to the organization's "First Annual Heart of Niagara Summer Picnic" on Saturday, July 12 (rain or shine), in Oppenheim Park, 2713 Niagara Falls Blvd., Wheatfield. The event runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. It begins with a pooch parade/dog walk at 11 a.m., followed by a full barbecue lunch ($12 per person) catered and served by "Taste of The Niagara Region" winner Formal BBQ and Catering. Enjoy a veggie and cheeseburger bar, Sahlen's hot dogs, pasta salad, fresh grilled corn on the cob, cornbread, rolls and butter and watermelon.

Tickets can be purchased in person at HON events, through PayPal online at http://heartofniagara.org/events/the-first-annual-heart-of-niagara-summer-picnic/, on the HON events page, or by mail with check payable to Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue care of Heart of Niagara Animal Rescue, PO Box 462, Lewiston, NY 14092.

The picnic includes live calypso and steel drum band music with limbo and audience participation songs for children performed by Tropical Explosion Steel Drum Band (includes members of Caribbean Extravaganza), dog agility and obedience, lawn games and dog contests for owners to participate with their dogs, nail clipping for a donation to HON provided by Deb's Dog Palace and Dee's Dog House (in the grooming area), photos by Wild Eye Mobile Pet Photography, a basket auction and other activities.

Local businesses continue to show an outpouring of support with sponsorship provided by Colton RV, Blackwinds Pet Supplies, Brett's Tent and Awning, ECO Recycling Centers, Kimmons Coffee Service, Mark Cerrone Inc. and Stuart Sports.

The event will raise necessary funds for the continuation of Heart of Niagara's work in saving animals. Some proceeds will go toward HON's future goal of owning its own building. A central HON location would expedite the adoption process by providing a place for the public to view animals, provide staff and volunteer training sessions, dog behavioral training and volunteer meetings.

Heart of Niagara is 501(c) (3) not-for-profit companion animal rescue organization based in Niagara County. Its mission is to protect the health and welfare of abandoned, unwanted and homeless animals. Volunteers have adopted out more than 180 animals since their inception in January 2013, and operate solely on donations and the generosity and support of the public.
