Lewiston Police lose a brother, K-9 'Radar'

The Lewiston Police Department suffered a loss in its K-9 unit Wednesday. "Radar," a tracking, drug recognition and patrol dog, was put down. He had been diagnosed with splenic cancer at Cornell University.

"He was deteriorating to the point that his quality of life just wasn't there anymore," said LPD Chief Chris Salada.

 Officer Scott Stafford, his handler, had the "unfortunate task of taking my partner with my family to our veterinarian to euthanize him."

The Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. has honored "Radar" by creating a tribute on Facebook that reads, "Brothers come in all breeds."

LPD received "Radar" from the Czech Republic seven years ago. He quickly became an active member of the community. Students from schools across Lewiston were credited with naming the puppy when he first arrived.

Seven years later, the community is mourning "Radar," a dedicated member of local law enforcement.

He will be missed.
