Do you have an ongoing health condition?

The Niagara County Department of Health, in partnership with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, is offering free chronic disease self-management workshops throughout the county for any individuals with an ongoing health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or arthritis. The first workshop will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at Urban Towers, 77 Main St., Lockport, beginning Tuesday, June 17. Another workshop is scheduled to begin Friday, June 27. It will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pendleton Town Hall, 6570 Campbell Boulevard, Lockport.

The workshops consist of six consecutive weekly classes.

This is a program with proven health benefits for people 60 years and older with any type of ongoing health condition. The program is designed to complement the health care individuals may already be receiving. The purpose of the free workshops is to help chronically ill persons enhance their skills and abilities to manage health, to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles and to feel better. Program instructors encourage caregivers of chronically ill persons to consider attending, too, as the program provides opportunities for caregivers to learn, share and to support each other.

There is no cost to attend these classes.

If you have chronic heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure or chronic pain, or if you are a caregiver for someone with a chronic condition, contact NY Connects through the Office for the Aging at 716-438-3030, or the Niagara County Department of Health nursing division at 716-278-1900 (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.) to register for the classes.

If your group or organization is interested in scheduling a workshop, call the health department at 716-278-1900.
