Villages of Lewiston, Youngstown work to keep dream alive

The latest example of "shared services" between Lewiston and Youngstown came to be this week when the Dory Trading Post on Main Street moved on acquiring a number of bikes that formerly were a part of the Village of Lewiston.

In the Dory's planning for summer operations, one idea that came up was availing bicycles for rent to visitors. The Dory earlier presented a plan for bike rentals to the Village of Youngstown trustees, which approved a small area on Main Street across from the business to situate the bikes. But how and where to acquire them came the question.

"Wonder if Lewiston's bikes are still around?" asked the Dory's Elizabeth Beaty.

Turns out the Village of Lewiston did, in fact, have ownership to a number of bicycles that had been used earlier for a similar purpose at the Little Yellow House on Center Street. But no longer. The bikes have been in storage at the Red Brick Municipal Building.

Jennifer Pauley, president of the Niagara River Region Chamber, suggested the Dory contact Lewiston Trustee Bruce Sutherland, a strong supporter of the bike rental dream.

Sutherland informed the Lewiston Village Board of Trustees of the Dory's plans and suggested a donation. Mayor Terry Collesano and the board met that with unanimous approval. "The Village of Lewiston is always looking for ways to partner with the Village of Youngstown," said Sutherland.

Youngstown Mayor Raleigh Reynolds agreed. "Municipalities need to work together, and this is a good example of how our two villages can work together."

"It all starts with a dream, then a conversation, and we think all the communities in the lower Niagara region should work together" added the Dory's "Miss Jane."

All bike rental net proceeds will be given back to the Village of Youngstown Recreation Center. "We do things to offer it back to our communities", said Beaty.
