On Tuesday, May 6, students, faculty and staff of Niagara Catholic Jr./Sr. High School volunteered throughout Niagara County as part of their annual "Day of Caring."

With more than 150 volunteers, the Niagara Catholic family participated in several activities at 17 sites throughout the area. Students performed many tasks, such as gardening, cleaning, organizing food pantries, running bingo programs at senior centers, and working with pre-K students.

This day offered students in grades 7-12 an opportunity to experience the various needs of others throughout the community. It introduced students to the importance of service and allowed them to feel the inner joy that comes from helping others.

Students at Wheatfield Towers in Niagara Falls organized a bingo game for the residents. They sold bingo boards, 50/50 raffle tickets and snacks, raising $50, which will be donated to the Red Cross by the student volunteers.

Niagara Catholic 10th grader Sarah DeVantier said, "It was nice how happy the residents were to see us. I enjoyed knowing that we made their days better."

Other participants went to other sites such as Niagara Habitat, Niagara Hospice, Community Missions and St. Vincent De Paul.

"It was fun to build a house, and it felt good!" said Niagara Catholic senior Maria Sciarrino.

The eventful day ended with Niagara Catholic students, faculty and staff energized by the valuable insights into the many volunteer organizations that exist in Niagara County and each site's need for volunteers.

Niagara Catholic ninth grader Precious Adamson wrote, "I learned that it is nice to help others sometimes. It makes you feel good inside."
