Mount St. Mary's Hospital recognizes volunteers for contributing more than 62,000 hours of service

More than 220 volunteers from Mount St. Mary's Hospital and Health Center and the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence were honored at the annual volunteer recognition luncheon Thursday at the Niagara Falls Country Club.

In 2013, more than 62,000 hours of service were given by volunteers at the hospital and nursing care residence to improve the lives of others. Volunteers represent the American Red Cross, Our Lady of Peace, Mount St. Mary's Hospital, VanGo drivers, St. Francis Guild, board of associates and the senior companion program.

The third annual Outstanding Volunteer Award in Honor of Ruth Woolery was presented to Ann Gallagher of Lewiston who has more than 18 years of service and was selected by her peers.

Individuals recognized for more than 1,000 hours of service include: Dolores Borowski and Marilyn Keenan, foster grandparents at the Child Care Center; and Lucille Rice, HANCI senior companion program.

Individuals recognized for more than 500 hours of service include: Philo Brooks, VanGo; Nancy Christodoulides, surgery hostess; Rosemary Dann, gift shop; Jessica Freeman, gift shop; Velma Hoffner, surgery hostess; Angie Kujawa, gift shop/info. desk; Stephen LaBarber, info. desk; Milton Lindsay, mail cart; Donna Montie, coffee cart/north lobby; Ed Page, info. desk; Doug Reading, VanGo/EmStar; Jean Rosenberg, gift shop/info. desk; Dolores Scarfone, EmStar; Mary Rose Thomas, gift shop/info. desk; and Greta Thompson, SFG gift shop.

Individuals recognized also included those who have served 20 or more years from Mount St. Mary's. The list includes: Kathy Banks (21 years), Elsie Bateman (26 years), Mary Lou Brennan (22 years), Rosemary Dann (26 years), Sandy Demus (21 years), Margaret Destino (29 years), Josephine Deweese (26 years), Shirley Elia (42 years), Peter Fatouros (23 years), Jane Finn (26 years), Janet Furlong (26 years), Dennis Horvath (26 years), Pat Irish (26 years), Mary Lou Lanphear (36 years), Milt Lindsay (28 years), Marilyn Lojek (24 years), Arline Loughrey (25 years), Ed Page (30 years), Sarah Jean Pasek (21 years), Marianne Rampado (28 years), Cecilia Ryan (32 years), Sheila Spatar (28 years), Phyllis Ibaugh-Specyal (21 years), Joyce Switzer (25 years), Audrey Tower (21 years), Agnes Wakeman (24 years) and Eleanor Zelinski (25 years).

Individuals who reached 20 years of service this year are: Dorothy Cicero, Red Cross; Phyllis Eisenman, Red Cross; Jessica Freeman, SFG; Elizabeth McGhee, SFG; and Barbara Scozzafava, SFG.

Our Lady of Peace Volunteer awards will be presented to the Rev. William McGarry for spiritual care; and Mary Ruth Baumler, MSM grandparents class presenter/OLP spiritual care.

"Our dedicated volunteers give so much to our patients and their families," said Judith A. Maness, hospital president and CEO. "From greeting visitors at the main lobby, to escort and delivery and everything in between, they all touch the lives of our patients, staff and physicians. They are very special people."

Volunteers work in many areas of the hospital and nursing care residence. They also operate the "VanGo" patient transportation system.

The program also welcomed new volunteers to the organization and said goodbye to seven volunteers who passed away in 2013. Those who were remembered for their passing included: Betty Olver, who was a 20-year volunteer, and Lois Grauerholz, a 20-year volunteer. Those retired for service include Dorothy Kraft with 16 years of service, and Mary Lou Lanphear with 36 years of service.

New volunteers at Mount St. Mary's Hospital include: Kent Blakelock, VanGo; Mireille Douville, EmStar; Kathleen Fleming, north lobby; Sr. Nancy Fortkort, spiritual care; Jerome King, Clearview driver; Lawrence Luben, Clearview driver; Sandy Marchetti, cardiac rehabilitation; Rosalie Ponzi, escort and delivery; Sr. Mary Ann Rapp, spiritual care/info. desk; Colleen Swavy, SFG gift shop; James Udy, VanGo assistant; and Dale Williamson, OP surgery.
