Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for April 18, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 176 calls from April 5 to 11. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to six burglary false alarm calls and two fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, April 5

•East River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, someone stole various items from her property.

•Staley Road, fraud - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent weeks, someone used his personal information to fraudulently file for taxes in his name. Information was forwarded to the Internal Revenue Service.

•Sawmill Run, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that a vehicle delivering pizzas for a local business struck her parked vehicle and then fled the scene. Deputies found the driver nearby, who returned to the owners address and exchanged insurance information.

•Whitehaven Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•I-190, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 27-year-old man from Niagara Falls for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree and other traffic infractions after a Department of Motor Vehicles check showed his license was currently suspended. The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $250 bail.

•Baseline Road, fatal residential fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. with a report of an apartment fire. The Grand Island Fire Co. reported one victim was found inside the apartment. The Erie County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Unit was requested by the Grand Island Fire Co. for assistance in the investigation.

•East River Road, fireworks use - A complainant stated he heard several loud booms consistent with fireworks during the late evening hours. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

Sunday, April 6

•Whitehaven Road, larceny - An employee of a gas station stated that an unknown subject entered the store and while inside stole two lottery tickets. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•West River Road, welfare check - A complainant driving on West River Road stated that a woman in a wheelchair was on the side of the road and appeared disoriented. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the female.

•Baseline Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, while he was at evening Mass, someone stole various items from his vehicle.

•South State Parkway, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

Monday, April 7

•East River Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, drunk driving - Following an investigation of a harassment complaint, deputies arrested a 65-year-old woman for driving while intoxicated after members of the Grand Island Fire Co. stated she began to harass them after driving up in her vehicle while they were conducting a training exercise. The woman registered a .15 percent blood-alcohol content after submitting a sample of her breath for chemical analysis. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court and released to the custody of a sober third party.

Tuesday, April 8

•Alvin Road, larceny - An employee of a car dealership stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole tires from a vehicle on the sales lot.

•East River Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle occupied by two people was parked at a nearby residence that was recently sold. Deputies located the subjects and determined they were purchasing items from the owner.

Wednesday, April 9

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a parked occupied vehicle at a closed business. Deputies determined the driver of the vehicle was the owner of the business performing a late night check.

•Whitehaven Road, road obstruction - Deputies removed a large tree branch that was blocking the roadway.

•South State Parkway, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Sheree Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject came to her door attempting to sell energy. Deputies located the subject nearby and advised him.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 28-year-old man from Grand Island for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Colonial Drive West, animal complaint - A complainant stated her dog was attacked by another dog from the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

Thursday, April 10

•East River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a male subject in a van was acting suspiciously and when approached by the complainant, the driver sped off. Deputies located the driver nearby and determined he was garbage picking in the area.

•Broadway, residential fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. for a report of a furnace on fire. Minor damage was reported.

•Love Road, animal loose - A complainant stated that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

•Stony Point Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked on the street for several hours. Prior to the arrival of patrol, the complainant called back and stated he knew the owner of the vehicle and no longer required police assistance.

•Schwegler Road, traffic arrest - Following a traffic stop, deputies arrested a 27-year-old man from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree (a misdemeanor) and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration (a misdemeanor) after a DMV check showed his license was currently suspended. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

Friday, April 11

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a three-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Bedell Road, parking violation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked illegally between two handicapped parking spots. Deputies located the vehicle and issued a parking ticket.

•Broadway, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a male subject was behind a business in the wooded area and appeared to be having a small bon fire. Deputies were unable to locate any persons in the area pointed out to patrol.
