Rivershore Inc. has announced a new and unique 5K running event to be held in the Village of Lewiston Saturday, May 3. The Rivershore 5K will be held annually on the first Saturday of May to coincide with the Lewiston Smelt Festival, and will be the first of 10 runs in the DiMino Lower Niagara Running Series.

The event, professionally managed by Race Management Solution, seeks to support Rivershore programs while promoting the historic Village of Lewiston.

This one-of-a-kind running experience will start and finish on Lewiston Landing in front of the Barton Hill Hotel (start time 11 a.m.). Runners will experience the most challenging incline in Lewiston right out of the starting gate as they climb the North First Street hill before continuing on their scenic journey through the historic village and finishing at the Freedom Crossing monument overlooking the Niagara River and Canada. A party will follow at Water Street Landing with musical entertainment by Universal Mind ($10 admission for non-runners).

As part of the experience for runners and spectators alike, live historical characters courtesy of Lewiston Council on the Arts will be on hand, and self-guided walking tour information will be available courtesy of the Historical Association of Lewiston.

Runners may link to online registration through Rivershore's website, www.rivershore.org, or through www.buffalorunners.com or www.itsyourrace.com. The registration fee is $30 through May 1, and $35 beginning May 2.

The race will start in front of the Barton Hill Hotel located at 100 Center St. Plenty of free parking will be available along the waterfront between Water Street Landing and The Silo Restaurant. Packet pickup and race day registration will take place in the main lobby of the Barton Hill Hotel beginning at 9 a.m. Complimentary coffee and Manhattan Bagels will be served on the second floor terrace overlooking the starting line prior to the start of the race.

Water stations will be located at mile markers one and two. Bottled water will be provided courtesy of Wegmans to all participants as they cross the finish line. The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce is donating tent services, and restroom services are being provided courtesy of Modern Corporation. Event sponsors include The Barton Hill Hotel, Water Street Landing, Manhattan Bagel, Wegmans, Upstate Pharmacy, Certo Brothers, Lawley Benefits, Univera and People Inc.

This race will feature a gun start/chip finish using Jaguar Electronic RFID timing by Race Management Solutions. Results and times will be updated throughout the race and can be accessed at the finish line kiosk immediately after crossing the finish line or via mobile app (ITSYourRace, which can be downloaded onto a smartphone at no charge). Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winner along with the top three male and female runners in the each age group.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Rivershore Inc. and its efforts to support people living with disabilities as they pursue and achieve a meaningful life. Rivershore is one of just seven agencies statewide to be named a Compass agency by the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. Compass is an OPWDD initiative that recognizes and promotes provider agencies that have progressed beyond minimal regulatory compliance and have achieved excellence in service delivery. Only seven of the 700 providers statewide have been recognized by OPWDD as Compass agencies.
