Turkish studies workshop coming to Niagara University

An in-depth discussion of current Turkish issues is being held at Niagara University this Saturday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Turkish studies workshop features nine speakers who will be presenting research papers pertaining to Turkey. The papers address issues ranging from Turkish history and anthropology to philosophy and political science.

Talks will include the present political struggle facing the transcontinental nation, including the recent ban on Twitter, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's attempt to hold power in the face of corruption charges.

In addition, a series of 90-minute panel discussions will be held on the following topics:

•"Explorations on the Ottoman Social and Intellectual Life"

•"Mapping a Unique Modernity and Its Challenges"

•"Turkish Spirituality Across Boundaries"

Opening remarks will be offered by Dr. Levent Koch, director of the North East Turkish American Scholars; Dr. Hung Le, NU's vice president for international relations; Dr. Timothy Ireland, dean of NU's College of Arts and Sciences; and the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University.
