Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for March 21, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 157 calls from March 8 to 14. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to four burglary false alarm calls and seven fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, March 8

•Love Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone smashed her car window and stole a purse from inside. Erie County Sheriff's Office detectives processed the scene for evidence. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•International Drive, youth activity - A complainant stated that kids in the neighborhood were repeatedly putting a basketball net in the street.

•West River Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•Havenwood Lane, all-terrain vehicle operation - A complainant stated that ATVs were operating on town property. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the ATVs.

Sunday, March 9

Baseline Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - An employee of a restaurant stated that an unknown male subject paid for his items with a $50 bill and when the employee gave him his change, the male subject took the $50 and left the store.

•Bedell Road, burglary alarm/open door - Deputies responded to a report of a burglary alarm ringing. Upon arrival, deputies located an open door to the business. The premises were searched but no persons were found inside. The open door was determined to be an oversight by employees.

•East River Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that an unknown vehicle struck a speed limit sign and then left the area in an unknown direction.

•Stony Point Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a dark-colored vehicle was tailgating and speeding down the roadway. The complainant was able to get the license plate of the suspect vehicle. Deputies located the vehicle parked at the registered owner's address, where they spoke to the driver and advised him.

•Blackmon Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that an unknown person shot his parked vehicle with a paintball gun. Deputies located several youths in the area, who admitted to striking the vehicle on accident. The youths were advised at the request of the complainant, who did not wish to pursue charges.

•Pin Oak Circle, residential fire - Deputies assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. with a report of an appliance fire. No damage was reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, road rage - A complainant stated that a vehicle cut him off, and when the complainant parked his car in a parking lot nearby, the driver of the other vehicle followed him. The driver then got out of his vehicle and kicked the complainant's car before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect vehicle by the description given.

Monday, March 10

•Baseline Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Whitehaven Road, warrant arrest - Deputies arrested a 31-year-old man from Amherst on an outstanding bench warrant from the Village of Kenmore. The man was transferred to the custody of the Kenmore Police Department.

Tuesday, March 11

•Long Road, deer struck - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident involving a deer. No injuries were reported.

Wednesday, March 12

•Whitehaven Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was swerving all over the roadway. The complainant was able to follow the vehicle, which pulled into an apartment complex. Deputies found the vehicle illegally parked in the parking lot and blocking several vehicles in, but no driver was in sight. The vehicle was towed from the scene and issued several citations.

•West River Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that several trucks were revving their engines and causing a lot of noise. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicles by the description given.

•East River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a black and orange floatation-type device was floating near the shoreline at the South Grand Island Bridge. Deputies were able to see the object, which seemed to be some floating debris. The Coast Guard was notified.

•Whitehaven Road, criminal mischief - A town employee stated that, sometime in recent days, someone smashed a window on a town-owned vehicle that was parked at the Nike Base.

•Bedell Road, criminal mischief - A town employee stated that, sometime in recent days, an unknown vehicle drove over the grass at Veterans Park and caused damage.

•Stony Point Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•South State Parkway, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Lang Boulevard, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call at a local manufacturing business. Deputies checked the business, which appeared secure and in order. No persons were observed inside.

•Alvin Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Thursday, March 13

•Tracey Lane, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•Grand Island Boulevard, hit-and-run accident - Employees from a business stated that a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the parking lot and then fled the scene. Deputies located the vehicle nearby after a witness was able to get a license plate number. Their investigation led to the arrest of a 25-year-old woman from Grand Island for reckless endangerment in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor), leaving the scene of an injury accident (a class B misdemeanor) and other traffic infractions. The woman was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Whitehaven Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•Bedell Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a strong smell of marijuana was emanating from a nearby apartment in her complex. Deputies spoke to the occupant of the apartment in question, who gave patrol permission to search inside his apartment. No illegal substances were found and the subject was advised.

Friday, March 14

•Waterford Park, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that there were footprints in the snow going from house to house through the front yards. Deputies observed one set of footprints described by the complainant, which were seemingly going to each of the houses gas meters to conduct routine readings.

•Lang Boulevard, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call at a local manufacturing business. Deputies checked the business, which appeared secure and in order. No persons were observed inside.

•Island Park Circle, snowmobile operation - A complainant stated that a snowmobile drove across his property without permission. Deputies located the snowmobile and advised the operator.

•West River Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.
