Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for March 7, 2014

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 151 calls from Feb. 22 to 28. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 10 burglary false alarm calls and five fire alarms during the dates of this report.

Saturday, Feb. 22

•Broadway, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that her vehicle was damaged at an unknown time by and unknown person or persons. Deputies advised the complainant.

•Grand Island Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle almost struck him in the parking lot of a business. The vehicle left in an unknown direction prior to the arrival of patrol. Deputies checked the surrounding area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Bedell Road, parking violation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was unlawfully parked in a handicapped parking spot in an apartment complex. Deputies cited the vehicle for the violation.

Sunday, Feb. 23

•Love Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a male subject was sleeping at the wheel of a vehicle in a convenience store parking lot.

•Love Road, drunk driving - Following the investigation of the above incident, deputies arrested a 24-year-old man from driving while intoxicated and a traffic infraction. The man registered a .14 percent blood-alcohol content after submitting a sample of his breath for chemical analysis. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court and released to a sober third party.

•Bedell Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that she was involved in a property-damage-only accident and while trying to retrieve documents for the information exchange, the driver of the other vehicle sped off, almost striking her in the process. Deputies located the vehicle and driver nearby and arrested a 53-year-old man from Grand Island for reckless endangerment in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor) and several traffic infractions. The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $250 bail.

•First Street, burglary in progress - A complainant stated that two youths were entering an abandoned residence nearby. Deputies arrived on scene and observed two subjects fleeing the house in question on foot. One subject was apprehended in a nearby yard and the other was apprehended near West River Road. After the subjects were detained, in a search of the abandoned residence, deputies located a small marijuana growing operation in a bedroom. The 17-year-old and 15-year-old subjects were each charged with burglary in the third degree (a class D felony), unlawfully growing cannabis (a class A misdemeanor), obstruction of governmental administration in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor), theft of service (a class A misdemeanor) and resisting arrest (a class A misdemeanor). The 17-year-old offender was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court. The 15-year-old offender was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Erie County Family Court and released to the custody of his parents.

•Whitehaven Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that several vehicles were racing down the street. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicles by the description given.

•Majestic Woods Drive, identity theft - A complainant stated that someone unknown made numerous fraudulent charges on his credit card.

Monday, Feb. 24

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

Tuesday, Feb. 25

•Town Hall Terrace, loud music - A complainant stated that a neighbor in a nearby apartment was playing his music loud. Deputies spoke to the subject and advised him.

•Baseline Road, warrant arrest - Following a traffic stop, Deputies arrested a 25-year-old man from Buffalo after a check showed he had an outstanding bench warrant from the Town of Tonawanda. The man was transferred to the custody of the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.

•Love Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle cut him off and was speeding down the road. Deputies located the vehicle, which was parked at a nearby business, and advised the driver.

•The Commons, property found - A complainant stated that she found a bag full of gym clothes and wanted to turn it in to patrol.

•Bedell Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that someone damaged a political periodical by defacing the document.

•South State Parkway, property-damage-only - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Wednesday, Feb. 26

•Stony Point Road, wires down - Deputies responded to a report of a low-hanging wire. National Grid was notified.

•Baseline Road, welfare check - A complainant stated that an elderly male was walking in the middle of the road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects in the roadway.

Thursday, Feb. 27

•Tracey Lane, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was howling nearby for several hours. The dog control officer was notified.

•Fix Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.

•East River Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke with the occupants of the residence and determined the call to be a misdial.

•East River Road, deer struck - Deputies responded to a report a of one-car motor vehicle accident involving a deer. No injuries were reported.

Friday, Feb. 28

•Bush Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background investigation of a subject who applied for a pistol permit.
