Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-C-I-Lewiston, voted against the Dream Act Tuesday, citing the difficulties that honest, working-class families have paying for college. Ceretto said he believes these families should get help before people who are not in the country legally.

Ceretto issued the following statement on the Dream Act:

"Today, I voted against the Dream Act, which would give taxpayer-funded tuition assistance to illegal immigrants. This legislation is unfair to Western New York families who have to go into considerable debt to pay for college. Combined with the plan to give free college to convicts, it is clear that the priorities of downstate politicians are not aligned with working-class families who want to make a better life for their kids. The cost of college is way too high, and families who have played by the rules deserve tuition aid first."
