The event, sponsored by the Grand Island Sports Booster Club will be held at the Buffalo Launch Club and will honor the undefeated Vikings, who had a perfect 8-0 season, with only one touchdown scored on them while rolling up 259 points.

Town Board sets 1984 salaries

There will be no raise in the salaries of Grand Island councilmen this year. The $8,561 amount will be the same for 1984, although the budget approved by the Town Board included an increase to $9,161 for the part-time positions.

The decision not to accept the proposed hike was agreed upon by the board Monday in a 5-0 vote after Councilman Robert G. Swan recommended the action. Swan said reasons for his suggestion were that "the position is part time and councilmen do not depend upon the salary for their livelihood."

"I wish the county legislators would take a lesson from this reasoning," he said.

Other salaries approved by the board included $29,407 for the supervisor, $22,942 (from $21,441) for the town clerk and $29,937 (from $27,473) for the highway superintendent. Other town employees also stand to receive a 7 percent hike this year.

Erie County responds to Seneca Nation

As the legal battle over ownership of Grand Island continues, Erie County has received a formal response from the attorneys representing the Seneca Nation in their lawsuit.

Tenth District County Legislator Chuck Swanick and Supervisor Jim Pax report that the document gives specific answers to various points raised by County Attorney Ken Schoetz.

"For example, they concede that the Treaty of Canandaigua states that the Seneca Nation ceded land 30 years prior to that document, but dispute that Grand Island was part of the earlier transfer," said Swanick and Pax. "These are just legal points that have to be debated and proven before a judge. It is part of the lawsuit process and just means that everything is going ahead according to schedule."
