Jim Toellner, president and general manager of WGRZ-TV, has been named Broadcasting & Cable Magazine's GM of the Year in markets 51-100.

In this week's issue, Broadcasting & Cable Magazine, the pre-eminent trade magazine in the television industry, states, "An investment in reporting and a watchdog mentality are catalysts for Jim's success in turning WGRZ into the market leader in Buffalo."

"Television is a team sport, and our great team here at Channel 2 is responsible for this award," Toellner said. "I believe that much of the credit to the station's turnaround has to go to the unique bond, which has been created between the station and the community we serve."

"His title of general manager does not preclude him from being intensely involved in all facets of the television station," said WGRZ News Director Jeff Woodard. "You're still waiting for the coffee to kick in as you arrive at your desk, when Jim comes strolling up with a sly smile on his face. You grab a pen and paper because you know what's coming: another great idea."

"For all of his ideas and innovations, it is how he relates to the people around him that sets him apart in the industry," Woodard added. "Jim's leadership allows others to participate. He allows others to take those ideas and run with them, tweak them, and turn them into something memorable for the viewer of the client."

Toellner's stature and leadership in the community landed him among Buffalo Business First's "100 Most Influential People in WNY."

Toellner previously worked in sales for the Buffalo News, WIVB and WKBW before taking on the position of GM for WGRZ in 2003. He is a native of North Tonawanda and graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981 with a B.S. in management. He and his wife, Bernie, have two daughters: Brittany and Kristen.
