With winter approaching and temperatures dropping, demand is once again on the rise at the Community Soup Kitchen, operated by Community Missions Inc.

Entering the busiest season of the year, a major concern of the program - the functionality of the walk-in freezer - has been addressed thanks to a $5,000 grant from the East Hill Foundation.

Six days each week, an average of 125 individuals visit the Community Soup Kitchen, where they receive a free, well-rounded lunch. The food served comes from a variety of sources, including donations from businesses throughout Niagara County, as well as the agency itself. Being able to properly store the increased amounts of food necessary to operate the kitchen during the winter months made addressing the freezer unit a priority.

"Once again, the East Hill Foundation has stepped in to meet an urgent need at just the right time," said CMI Executive Director Robyn L. Krueger. "We are so appreciative for their support, and I believe that I can speak for the hundreds of individuals that we serve each day/week in the Community Soup Kitchen when I say 'Thank you.' "

The East Hill Foundation is a privately funded family foundation, which was founded in 1986. The foundation identifies and funds innovative, charitable projects designed to enhance the quality of life of the residents from the eight counties of Western New York.

In 2012, CMI provided more than 70,000 meals and 9,000 nights of care within its crisis services programs. Additional agency programs serve adults and youth with psychiatric disabilities, parolees, at-risk youth and other underserved populations in both residential and recovery-orientated settings.
