Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, hailed passage of S. 893, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act, in the House of Representatives. This legislation would provide for an annual cost-of-living adjustment increase to veterans compensation of the same amount as the Social Security COLA.

"Veterans and their families make huge sacrifices to protect our nation," Higgins said. "Proving adequate benefits is the least we can do to offer our thanks when they return home."

Having passed the Senate on Oct. 28, S. 893 will now be sent to the president's desk for his signature.

Higgins has also introduced H.R. 2169, the Veterans Education Flexibility Act, to make it easier for veterans to receive the educational benefits they have earned by removing the deadlines for using their benefits. It would allow veterans whose benefits have already expired to redeem them retroactively.
