School Board action implements contract

While members of the Grand Island Teachers Association met to consider a form of public protest that would focus attention upon the long delayed contractual agreement decision, facilitating meetings between the school superintendent, Dr. Oscar J. Pultz, and representatives of the teachers resulted in an opportunity to bring to culmination a satisfactory agreement for employment.

Late Friday afternoon, the teachers were informed that the possibility of an agreement was in the offing and that they might wish to delay action while awaiting the outcome of the talks, which occurred during the day.

Thus began a process that found agreement on the part of the local Board of Education on Monday evening Oct. 15. ... The board voted its unanimous approval for adoption of the motion ...

Town considers Carl water tank proposals

Proposals that included a climber swinging from ropes inside the Carl Road water tank were heard Tuesday morning by the Town Board special districts committee.
... The mountain climber is no joke, but one of several practical approaches the various firms offered for inspecting the inside of the standpipe. ...

Inspection, which includes photographing or videotaping the interior, is necessary to determine the degree of corrosion and pitting, the condition of the rivets and "scouring" in the water line area from ice rising and falling with the water level. Structural repairs may also be needed on the outside of the tank. Repairs must, of course, be done before painting begins.

The tank was manufactured and erected by Chicago Bridge and Iron in 1948 and has been painted three times since its original coating. ...

Pipeline will ensure Island's gas supply

Island gas users will benefit from the 12-inch branch line, which has been welded to the 24-inch natural gas pipeline now being installed across Grand Island.
The tie-in, made last week at Stony Point Road near Stanley, will stabilize gas pressure on the Island.

According to Ron Kramer, superintendent of engineering for National Fuel Gas Company, there is a more important feature to the line. He points out that the company has long been concerned about the single source of gas via a 12-inch pipeline buried in the river near the south bridges. There is a possibility, albeit remote, of damage to this pipe.

National Fuel Gas wanted a second pipeline to the Island, one that would be located in bedrock under the river. ...

Kids Voting needs volunteers

Kids Voting is a national, nonprofit partisan voter education program that encourages students to understand the importance of citizen participation in society. The program, in its sixth year in New York state, was created to reduce voter apathy and to improve students' knowledge of government, in hopes to instill lifelong voting habits. Students go to the polls on Election Day along with adults to cast their own ballots. Kids Voting needs community volunteers to help at one of the eight Grand Island voting sites on Election Day, Nov. 4. ..
