Congressman Brian Higgins is reminding high school students seeking a service academy nomination to submit their applications to his office by Nov. 15.
Service Academy appointments are made by the president of the United States based on congressional and/or military nominations. Each year, Higgins appoints an academy advisory board, made up of Western New York veterans and community leaders, to interview all applicants and make recommendations.
The five service academies include: the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (New York), U.S. Naval Academy at (Maryland), U.S. Air Force Academy (Colorado), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at (Kings Point) and U.S. Coast Guard Academy at (Connecticut).
Higgins recently held an academy workshop at Cheektowaga High School featuring representatives from each of the service academies to provide local students access to more information about the institutions and the process.
