Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Oct. 18, 2013

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 344 calls from Sept. 28 to Oct. 11. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 27 burglary false alarm calls and eight fire alarms during the dates of this report.

 Saturday, Sept. 28

•Ransom Road, all-terrain vehicle operation - A complainant stated that ATVs were operating recklessly in the area. Deputies checked the area and were unable to locate the ATVs.

•West River Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked at the west overlook during the late hours of the night. The occupants were advised and left without incident.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that during the recent nights she heard several gunshots in the area but did not call police. The complainant was advised.

•Baseline Road, grass fire - Deputies assisted Grand Island Fire Co. with a report of a grass fire.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a male subject was outside of a business soliciting patrons for money. Deputies located the male subject and arrested a 46 year-old man from Niagara Falls for false personation (a class B misdemeanor) after he gave a false name to deputies. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Grand Island Court.

•Grand Island Boulevard, animal complaint - A complainant stated she found a dog wandering around the area of a business. Deputies were able to determine the dog's owner by the collar tag and returned the animal.

•Stony Point Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the afternoon hours of the day. Deputies checked the area but found no one in violation of the local noise ordinance.

•First Street, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the residents.

•Ransom Road, fight - A complainant stated that a large fight was taking place at the Grand Island High School while the Homecoming Dance was letting out. Deputies determined the fight was between two individuals who both left prior to the arrival of patrol.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage only accident - Deputies respond to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, customer trouble - Employees of a business stated that an intoxicated male subject was harassing employees. Deputies located the subject, who was advised and left without further incident.

Sunday, Sept. 29

•Bedell Road, road obstruction - A complainant stated that someone dropped a box of nails in the roadway. Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition was notified and the nails were removed.

•Stony Point Road, road obstruction - A complainant stated that there were nails in the roadway. Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition was notified and the nails were removed.

•Grand Island Boulevard, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was locked inside of a vehicle during the day and appeared to be in distress. Deputies checked but were unable to locate the vehicle matching the description given.

•East River Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that an unknown vehicle struck her parked car and left the scene. No injuries were reported.

•Baseline Road, shots fired - A complainant stated he heard several shots coming from the wooded area behind his residence. Deputies checked but were unable to locate the source.

•Cardinal Lane, burglary of garage - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, someone unknown stole a bicycle from her garage. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Monday, Sept. 30

•Baseline Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

Tuesday, Oct. 1

•Baseline Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies checked the area and determined the complaint to be unfounded.

•West Oakfield Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked at his neighbor's residence. Deputies located the vehicle and the owner, who was completing work on the residence.

•Pin Oak Circle, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Alvin Road, accident injury - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. One driver was transported to a local hospital with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

•Fix Road, property-damage only accident - Deputies respond to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•West River Road, property-damage only accident - Deputies respond to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Bedell Road, road obstruction - A complainant stated that someone threw nails in the roadway. Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition was notified and the nails were removed.

Wednesday, Oct. 2

Love Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a vehicle parked with its flashers on the side of the road during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the owner nearby who was visiting a friend in the area.

•Alvin Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated he observed a vehicle that appeared to be driving on the lawn at a business during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the vehicle, which was owned by a landscaping company that was completing work on the property.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage only accident - Deputies respond to a report of a one-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that two subjects stole a couple bicycles from her and a neighboring residence. Deputies located the subjects nearby along with the bicycles and charged the juvenile offenders with grand larceny in the fourth degree (a class E felony) and petit larceny (a class A misdemeanor). One juvenile was transported to the East Ferry Juvenile Detention Center in Buffalo and the other was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court and released to the custody of a family member.

Thursday, Oct. 3

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent days, an unknown person or persons damaged a building in the Grand Island Plaza. Damage was listed as minimal.

•Bedell Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from an apartment in her complex during the late evening hours. Deputies located the apartment in question and advised the occupant.

Friday, Oct. 4

•Love Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the day, an unknown person or persons stole various items from her vehicle while it was parked in a parking lot.

•Fix Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime in recent hours, someone damaged a bush that the complainant had recently planted in his yard.

•Baseline Road, criminal possession of a weapon/menacing arrest - Deputies responded to a report of a road rage incident in progress on Baseline Road. Their investigation led to the arrest of a 62-year-old man from Niagara Falls for criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (a class C felony) and menacing in the second degree (a class A misdemeanor) after he used a handgun to intimidate the driver of the other vehicle involved. The man was also found to be in possession of a narcotic substance and was further charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree (a class A misdemeanor). The man was arraigned in the Town of Grand Island Court and remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.

•Lakeview Terrace, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a vehicle somewhere in his apartment complex. Deputies checked the area, but the complaint was unfounded.

Saturday, Oct. 5

•East River Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a nearby residence during the late hours of the night. Deputies located the house and advised the occupants.

•Colonial Drive, flood condition - Deputies responded to a report of flood conditions in the roadway. NITTEC was notified.

•East Park Road, flood condition - Deputies responded to a report of flood conditions in the roadway. NITTEC was notified.

•Redway Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Whitehaven Road, customer trouble - Employees of a business stated that a customer who was previously advised to stay away from the business was on location and causing a disturbance. The subject left prior to the arrival of patrol and employees were satisfied as they only wanted him to leave.

•Baseline Road, larceny - A complainant stated that someone) stole the floor mats from her vehicle while she was attending church.

Sunday, Oct. 6

•Baseline Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that several juveniles were running through the neighborhood being loud. Deputies located the subjects and advised them.

•East River Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•East River Road, animal loose - A complainant stated there were cows in his yard and it was unknown where they came from.

•Whitehaven Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated a male subject got his ATV stuck in a field behind a residence, then attempted to enter the house nearby. The complainant did not believe the subject belonged there. Deputies located the subject, who resides at the address.

•Sandy Beach Road, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

•Oakridge Drive, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that there was a suspicious vehicle parked in front of her residence and appeared to be occupied during the late evening hours. Deputies located the vehicle and advised the subject, who stated she was visiting a friend in the area.

Monday, Oct. 7

•Continental Lane, pistol permit investigation - Deputies conducted a background check of an individual who applied for a pistol permit.

Tuesday, Oct. 8

•Broadway, open door - A complainant stated she arrived at a property she owns and found an open door. She further stated no one should be inside the home. Deputies checked and found no subjects inside.

•Ferry Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that several subjects were walking through the yards. Deputies located the subjects, who were delivering phone books in the area.

•East River Road, wires down - Deputies responded to a report of wires in the roadway. National Grid was notified.

Wednesday, Oct. 9

•East River Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that back in July she was sitting inside her residence and the garage door closed for no reason. The complainant wanted patrol to be aware of the incident but reported nothing stolen or damaged.

•East Park Road, traffic arrest/narcotics arrest - Following a traffic stop and subsequent investigation, deputies arrested a 33-year-old man from Cheektowaga for traffic infractions and aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree after a Department of Motor Vehicles check confirmed his license was suspended. The man was also found to be in possession of suspected heroin and a hypodermic needle and was further charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree (a class A misdemeanor) and possession of a hypodermic instrument (a class A misdemeanor). The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center and was also found to have a warrant from the City of Buffalo.

•Love Road, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that, sometime the day before, an unknown vehicle struck his parked car and then left the area. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, animal loose - A complainant stated a dog was running loose in the neighborhood. The dog control officer was notified.

•Grand Island Boulevard, warrant arrest - Following an investigation of an unrelated complaint, deputies arrested a 28-year-old woman from Schenectady after she was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant from the City of Buffalo. The woman was transferred to the custody of the Buffalo Police Department.

•Harvey Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked on the side of the road. Deputies located the driver, who was hiking in the woods, and advised him.

•Baseline Road, warrant arrest - Deputies arrested a 41-year-old man from West Seneca after he turned himself in on bench warrant from Grand Island Town Court. The man was transported to the Erie County Holding Center.

•Whitehaven Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident involving a motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

Thursday, Oct. 10

•Whitehaven Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•Grand Island Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated a vehicle was driving recklessly down the roadway. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle by the description given.

•Baseline Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she found a bag of a white powder substance and did not know what it was. Deputies tested the substance, but it was negative for any narcotic drug.

•Alvin Road, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime in the recent days, someone stole various items from his vehicle while it was parked at a business.

•Bishops Gate Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked in front of his residence and appeared to be occupied. Deputies checked the area but the vehicle left prior to the arrival of patrol.

•Huth Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the occupants of the residence and determined the call to be a misdial.

•Huth Road, suspicious person with vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious male subject was talking with some children playing on the school playground. Deputies spoke with the subject, who was a parent of one of the children.

•Stony Point Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was being mistreated by its owner. The dog control officer was notified.

•Bedell Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Friday, Oct. 11

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that someone stole scrap metal from his automotive yard sometime in recent hours. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Love Road, larceny - A complainant stated that approximately one month ago her purse was stolen by someone while she was at restaurant.

•Wallace Drive, parking violation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was partially blocking her driveway. The vehicle left prior to the arrival of patrol.

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a four-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, traffic arrest - Following a report of a reckless operation and subsequent investigation, deputies arrested a 47-year-old man from Grand Island for aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, possession of a hypodermic instrument (a class A misdemeanor), and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle. The man was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Grand Island Court.
