Sullivan reports on River Oaks development

With autumn's arrival and the end of the building season looming on the horizon, a lot of local citizens are raising the question, "What's happening at River Oaks?" We have posed this question to Senior Councilman George Sullivan and his answer is here.

Originally the developer projected that between January 1970 and December 1972, he would have completed a hotel and convention center, a golf clubhouse and course, a sports pavilion, a marina, and the first phase of single unit dwellings, 70 in number.

Also projected was a shopping center that was expected to be under construction during the year 1972. This projection was accepted by the Town Board as an integral part of the overall plan for the PUD (Planned Unit Development) in this area.

There are a variety of factors that placed the development far behind schedule for their proposed project and the construction of roads, sewer laterals and the housing and apartment complex.

Teacher negotiations go to fact-finding

Grand Island Teachers Association President Joanne McCartin, speaking from the floor, opened the Sept. 26 School Board meeting with comments about the lack of a teachers' contract. Mrs. McCartin pointed out that although teachers had anticipated settlement as of Sept. 1, when no agreement came they acted responsibly and had gone to work.

Commenting that, "The longer these things go, the more rancor builds up," she said she hoped settlement would come soon.

An executive session on teacher negotiations the same evening did not reach settlement. William McGee, supervisor for personnel for the district, reported Wednesday that the dispute would go to fact-finding, with sessions not yet scheduled. Reports, however, are expected by the end of October, Mr. McGee said.

Islanders favor two-phase toll systems

The E-Z Pass electronic bridge toll collection system, to become effective soon, has its merits but Islanders have indicated they favor having commuter ticket books also continue to be available for town residents who wish to purchase them.

Protested at public information meetings and in the Golden Age Center Wednesday, was the plan to have bridge crossers limited to using the E-Z Pass system or pay a 50 cents toll.

"We should have the option of using the new system or buying the commuter books, Supervisor James Pax said. Copies of his request were sent to Thruway Chairman Peter Tufo, Gov. Mario Cuomo, Sen. Tony Masiello and Assemblyman Sam Hoyt. ...

Island student in modeling competition

Nicole Newton, a 12-year-old eighth grade student at Connor Middle School on Grand Island, will compete in the MB Expo international modeling competition later this month in Dallas. A student of the Exxcel Model and Talent Agency in Buffalo, Newton was handpicked to compete in the prestigious event.

The four-day competition features dozens of talent agents from all over the world. Successful models attract attention from agencies all around the country.
