Local fire departments are holding open houses and special events next week as part of Fire Prevention Week. This year's Fire Prevention theme is "Prevent Kitchen Fires."

The National Fire Protection Association states, "From Oct. 6-12, we'll be spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home - and we'll help teach people how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place."

Two Wheatfield volunteer fire companies are planning open houses in conjunction with 2013 Fire Prevention Week, said Marc Kasprzak of the Town of Wheatfield Fire Advisory Board:

•Adams, 7113 Nash Road - Friday, Oct. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m.

•St. Johnsburg, 7165 Ward Road - Saturday, Oct. 12, from noon to 4 p.m.

Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co. is planning an open house in November in connection with the dedication of its new ladder truck.
