Pauline Ghougasian, owner of Mode Image in Lewiston, recently opened her salon to some middle school students from the Tuscarora Indian School. She talked to students about having a career as a hairstylist or cosmetologist, and what is involved in running your own business. She explained about finances, scheduling, time and money management, ordering supplies and keeping inventory.
Principal Elizabeth Corieri said the salon visit was voluntary and part of the "Girl Power" program that ran during the summer.
"The goal of this class is giving students experiences for real life application, and getting them college ready. Ms. Ghougasian did a great job at explaining the steps to go into this sort of career and the schooling involved," Corieri said. "As a treat, our students also got to experience some pampering to help them feel better about themselves. They had a great time. For many, it was the first time they had visited a salon. It was great seeing their reactions."
