Village of Lewiston hosts Country Fair, Community Yard Sale

The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department, with the help of the Lewiston Garden Club, is sponsoring its 17th annual Lewiston Country Fair on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St., during the Community Yard Sale.

Country Fair

Amateur gardeners, farmers, bakers, photographers and creative children and adults will join in the fair fun. There will be competition, as with all country fairs, for the best in vegetables and the best in flowers. Vegetables will be judged in many different divisions. Large pumpkins will be welcomed.

Flowers will be judged based on those blooming in September as well as dried arrangements and houseplants. Different categories will be included. The entrant must have grown all vegetables and flowers.

Amateur bakers will enjoy the cake, pie, cookie and miscellaneous competition. All ingredients must be from scratch. Ingredients must be listed and cannot include items such as instant pudding, cake mixes, etc. Each division will be judged and produce winners.

Again this year will be the relish and jams competition. This includes pickles, salsa and relishes, jams and preserves. Ingredients must be listed and must be made from scratch.

Families and individuals are invited to submit a scarecrow entry in the "Avenue of Scarecrows." Best of Show will be awarded. Each entrant must supply his or her own scarecrow.

All amateur photographers are welcome to participate in the photography competition. They're urged to submit their photo in one of four categories: nature, people, landscape and photos of Lewiston.

A special prize will be awarded in the Lewiston category winner. Photos must be taken this year and must feature the village. Photos can be in color or black and white. All photos are to be at least 5-by-7 inches and must be matted or framed. One photo entry per photographer can be entered in this category. Applications can be found on the Village of Lewiston's website, www.villageoflewiston.net.

The Recreation Department is inviting people to bring in crafts to be judged. The categories in this competition include painting, wood, woodcarving, Native American beading, card making, a craft project using rubber stamps, a scrapbook page, collages, needlework, quilts, sewing (no clothing, unless part of another craft, such as beading or quilting), decorative wreaths, painting and miscellaneous.      

Application forms for the vegetable, flower, food, photography, craft and scarecrow judging are available at the Red Brick (Village of Lewiston Clerk's Office or Recreation Department) and by calling 716-754-1990.

To enhance the atmosphere for the Country Fair, A Step in Time will performing music from 10 a.m. to noon, while The Niagara Frontier Fiddle Club takes the stage from noon until 2 p.m., and Another Thyme performs from 2 until 4 p.m.

The Lewiston Junior Garden Club will have a "Make your own Arrangement" event from 11:30 a.m. until supplies are depleted. Children ages 3 to 93 can make an arrangement with mums by stopping by the Junior Garden Club Booth. All supplies will be provided free of charge.

From 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a petting zoo, and from noon until 2 p.m. the Bounce-n-Around will be available for the children.

With the help of the Lewiston Museum, the Recreation Department will highlight historic postcards of Lewiston from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The postcards have been enlarged for the show and depict life in the village as well as a tourist attraction or historic photograph. This "Clothesline Show," the fourth in a series of historic pictures, will be held inside the Red Brick gym.

All events are free and open to residents and non-residents alike. The Country Fair will be held rain or shine with as many events moving inside as possible in the event of inclement weather.

Community Yard Sale

The Community Yard Sale takes place Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., outside of the Red Brick. Participants can rent a space for the day to sell yard sale items to the public.
