Bill Murray makes a grand entrance Liberace-style on the "Late Show with David Letterman" when Murray, the first guest to visit "The Late Show" when it premiered on Aug. 30, 1993, helps the host mark 20 years on the CBS Television Network tonight.
Arriving onstage in a white, vintage Rolls-Royce, below a sign onstage in script lettering that reads "Billy," Murray, resplendent in a white Liberace-style outfit, complete with a cape, a white toy poodle and wearing Liberace's signature hairstyle, gets escorted out of the Rolls by a young, blonde man wearing a gold-and-white chauffeur uniform to take his seat next to Letterman.
David Letterman (standing and applauding): "Wow, that was wonderful, Bill." (audience applauds)
Paul Shaffer: "Bravo, bravo, bravo. Wow. ..."
Letterman: "Wow. Delightful. ... I didn't know you had a dog." (audience, Letterman laugh)
Murray: "I had to get something that went with this outfit." (audience laughs)
Letterman: "Well, you really have - my heart has now taken flight." (audience laughs)
Murray: "Thank you, Dave. You know, I love you, audience, I love you, but I don't have time tonight, 'cause I'm only here for one reason." (points to Letterman)
Letterman: "Oh, that's very special." (audience applauds)
Murray's entire interview, including the special "billboard" he took out for Letterman for his 20 years at CBS and his unearthing - using a pickaxe and a jackhammer - of a time capsule near Letterman's desk onstage with "artifacts" from Aug. 30, 1993, can be seen on "The Late Show" tonight (11:35 p.m.) on CBS.
As of tonight's broadcast, the multiple Emmy Award-winning "Late Show with David Letterman" will have broadcast 3,897 episodes and four primetime specials in its 20 years on CBS. Since its debut on the network on Aug. 30, 1993, the critically acclaimed show has been honored with nine Emmy Awards, including six for "Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program," and a staggering 73 Emmy nominations.
Also featured on "The Late Show" tonight is a performance by musical guests Lenny Kravitz and Gladys Knight, who is making her first appearance on one of Letterman's late night talk shows, as well as a special ""Late Show Photo Album" to close out the broadcast, featuring iconic images from the show's 20 years at CBS.
