The Grand Island Town Board recognized Islander Phyllis Lange at its meeting on Monday at Town Hall for her ministry to the poor in Buffalo since 1982.

The board issued a town proclamation to Lange, the wife of United Methodist METRO minister and Grand Island pastor Rev. James Lange, who in 1982 started a soup kitchen at Asbury Delaware United Methodist Church in Buffalo. According to the proclamation, Phyllis volunteered at the kitchen, called the Good News Dining Room, cooking and serving lunch to 150 to 300 people five days a week for six months until the church hired a cook.

After that location closed, she worked at a soup kitchen at a new location in January of 1991 without missing a shift. From January 1991 to Friday, July 26, 2013, Phyllis Lange recruited volunteers from Trinity United Methodist Church to work at the Central City Café.

In issuing the proclamation, the board thanked Lange "for her remarkable dedication and extended service that illustrates by example the character of Grand Islanders, and wishes her good health and happiness for many more years."

Lange is pictured at center receiving the proclamation from Grand Island Town Supervisor Mary Cooke, and members of the Town Board. She is surrounded by friends and family.
