Local residents will have an opportunity to rid their homes of potentially dangerous items Saturday when the Niagara County Refuse District holds a household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off at Lockport Town Hall.

The event, hosted jointly by Niagara County, the Town of Lockport, and State Sen. George D. Maziarz, provides residents a chance to dispose of old paint, automotive fluids, pesticides, and other common hazardous materials found around households, garages, basements and sheds. It will run Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lockport Town Hall, 6560 Dysinger Road.

Dawn Timm, the Refuse District's interim director, said the district had worked closely with local leaders including Maziarz, Supervisor Marc Smith, Mayor Michael W. Tucker and County Legislator Rick Updegrove to plan the hazardous waste collection.

"This event has been a real priority for Legislator Updegrove, Mayor Tucker and Supervisor Smith due the recent flooding that occurred in the area," Timm explained.

Those wishing to dispose of household hazardous waste are required to schedule an appointment with the Niagara County Refuse District by either visiting the district's website at www.rethinkyourwaste.com or by calling 716-439-7250. A list of items that will be accepted is also available online.

Residents may also dispose of electronic waste at the drop-off. No appointments are required to dispose of electronics.

Timm noted residents who do not utilize the drop-off day will likely be unable to do so until next year, and encouraged them to take advantage of Saturday's household hazardous waste drop-off.

"This will be the final collection event for 2013, and we will post our 2014 schedule online by the end of the year," Timm said. "We're expecting good weather, and we hope to see a lot of people turning in household hazardous materials."

The hazardous waste drop-off is open to all county residents, and is free of charge for residents of the Niagara County Refuse Disposal District. Non-district residents (those who reside in Niagara, Cambria, Wilson and Newfane) are also welcome to participate, but are asked to bring a check for $19, payable to the "Niagara County Refuse Disposal District."
