North Tonawanda Mayor Robert G. Ortt has announced an emergency shelter has been set up at the North Tonawanda High School Alumni Center, 405 Meadow Drive. The Red Cross is there to assist and provide transportation to those who need it.

"For those residents using a generator, remember to keep it in an open space where there is plenty of ventilation," Ortt said. "Keeping it in a garage or indoors increases risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and/or fire hazard. Please call 911 to report downed power lines or wires, or any other emergency. Treat every downed power line or wire as if it were live. To report an outage or personal service line disconnection to National Grid, call 1-800-642-4272. Residents who have suffered property damage are encouraged to take photographs and document the damage for their insurance purposes."

"We have been working with National Grid since the early hours of Saturday morning to restore power as soon as possible," Ortt continued. "We had a severe thunderstorm, which knocked out several power stations and has caused severe flooding, not just in North Tonawanda, but across Niagara County. I would like to ask for residents' continued patience as we work to clean up our city and restore power to those who have lost it."

"I would like to commend Brad Rowles and our men and women at the Department of Public Works for working through the night to clear roadways of fallen trees and power lines, as well as setting up pumps to alleviate the water and make our roads passable. I would also like to thank our first responders, including our police, fire and emergency management personnel for their efforts and providing public safety and response during these last difficult hours," he added.
