Changes in "The Neighborhood"

Most Islanders have accepted the fact that the growth and change are happening to this once remote community and that as long as there is land for sale and persons who wish to develop it, that will probably be the case.

We grumble or applaud the appearance of new buildings and subdivisions and complain about the increased traffic on our roadways and the lack of traffic signals to control it.

Few of us, however, have taken a thoughtful look at what this growth and change has meant to us and where we actually live - in the neighborhood. In an effort to measure this important quality of life, we here at the Dispatch are going to spend a little time these next few weeks examining Island neighborhoods. It is our opinion that a lot of what is going on, at least in terms of people, might turn out to be a distinct advantage in spite of some practical problems. If it isn't advantageous, we can do something positive to make it so without waiting for matching funds from anyplace outside ourselves.

The organizational session will include the election of a board president and vice president. It will be a first meeting for the three members elected in June: Veanna Schwanebeck, Billy J. Oliverio and Frank Cannata.

The budget decision may depend upon the report by Superintendent Robert C. Courtemanche and administrators, who were instructed to examine the rejected budget and submit recommendations.

Playground controversy plagues Town Board

A proposal to replace unsafe playground equipment at Kaegebein Elementary School had the Town Board and audience's heads spinning like a merry-go-round after Tuesday night's Grand Island Town Board meeting.

The Town Board has designated the newly acquired $10,290 to replace old playground equipment at Kaegebein. The town is obligated to replace only town-owned equipment that is half the playground's capacity (60 children). The $10,290 will meet just a quarter of the town's responsibility.

The current working solution that was presented by Councilman Paul Klock was to duplicate the equipment found at Colonial/Driftwood, however that would still leave the town responsible in the future for adding another quarter. Required to complete the town's half of the playground would be $25,000.

As always, the Town of Grand Island celebrated the Fourth of July with various activities, including the Dick Bessel Kids Race, Dick Bessel Independence Day Run, the parade, and an amazing fireworks display.

More than 200 people participated in the run, which saw David Carroll of West Seneca finished with the best race time of 12:03. The top female finisher was Carrie Leach, recording a time of 14:02. Top honors for Grand Island residents went to Bob Merritt (12:09) for the men and Mary Beth Lacki (15:28) for the women.
