The Niagara County Department of Health's Animal Response Team will participate at the Heart of Niagara adoption event July 14 at Blackwinds Pet Supply, 2494 Military Road, Niagara Falls.

The main adoption event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Akron Canine Rescued Angels will showcase pets needing adoptive homes. Event organizers will sell hot dogs and refreshments to support the care of rescued animals awaiting adoption. From 2 to 4 p.m., the Niagara County CART will scan cats and dogs for identification while veterinarian, Dr. Kristen Ruest of the Village Vet of Lewiston, volunteers her services to insert microchips.

The microchip insertion is free to low-income families that cannot otherwise afford the service. The microchip insertion includes a free lifetime enrollment into the National Animal Recovery Database. The Niagara County Department of Health obtained the free scanner and the animal microchips through separate American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery and Homeland Security grants.

For questions about eligibility for free microchip insertion, contact Elaine Roman at 716-439-7436 or Elise Pignatora at 716-439-7431.
