KeyBank has been named the lead sponsor of the 29th annual Chalkwalk competition, taking place Saturday, Aug. 10, and presented by the Lewiston Council on the Arts. The popular attraction, held in conjunction with the Lewiston Art Festival, Aug. 10 and 11 on Center Street in the Village of Lewiston, features teams of talented high school art students from across Western New York.

Inspired by a different theme each year, teams design and then execute spectacular murals on the streets of Lewiston as they compete for prize money, trophies and bragging rights for their school.

The theme for this year's mural competition is "Forces of Nature: Earth, Air, Fire & Water."

Students are encouraged to create a mural that reflects that theme in an artistic way.

"Art is 'key,' just as green is key to our daily lives," said Fay Northrop, Chalkwalk chairperson. "Our green theme recalls the canvases of Henri Rousseau with his exotic jungle paintings of prolific greens that seemed to emphasize the importance of preserving our environment. It is my hope that students might look at the work that artists did and are doing now, to raise awareness in keeping our Earth green."

"KeyBank has a strong commitment to our communities and to our environment," said Marie Hare, vice president, philanthropy and civic affairs, for KeyBank. We have been "seeing green for a number of years, thus we are excited about this year's theme. The very talented WNY high school art students are certain to provide us with another stellar art show competition."

The competition will take place on Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., at the intersection of Center and Fifth streets. "Arts are Key" prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place, as well as a People's Choice Award, which is determined by audience vote.
