Twenty-three children from Niagara County are attending the New York State Sheriffs' Association Institute's 2013 Summer Camp. Eleven young people from Niagara County left last Sunday for the camp. A second group of 12 young campers will be heading to camp this Sunday, June 30.

The camp, located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs' Association's honorary members through their contributions and annual dues. This year, the camp will accommodate more than 900 deserving boys and girls from across the state.

This is the 37th year of operation for the camp.

Deputy Joseph Flagler of the Niagara County Sheriff's Office will be attending camp for the fifth year in a row, working with the second group of young campers from Niagara County. Two new faces from Niagara County will be volunteering as counselors at camp this year, Corey Mack and Tyler Mack, the sons of Sgt. Kevin Mack and Victim Advocate Kristen Mack, both employed by the Sheriff's Office.

Throughout the weeklong stay, the children participate in typical camp activities such as archery, sailing, boating, hiking, and talent shows. They also experience technical and safety demonstrations by deputy sheriffs including scuba diving, K-9 handling, bicycle safety and boating safety.

"The campers get an insiders look at the world of law enforcement," Voutour said. "By working with and learning from the sheriffs and deputy sheriffs at the camp, the kids develop a deeper respect for, and understanding of, the men and women who enforce our laws."
