Tour fire safety house; simulate texting while driving; register for child safety I.D.s and more

The New York Power Authority will hold a Family Safety Fair on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at its admission-free Power Vista, the visitor center for NYPA's Niagara hydroelectric power plant.

The event will feature safety information and presentations from various public safety offices and exhibitors. This includes an exhibit that simulates the hazards of texting while driving, operated by the New York State Police and presented in cooperation with Nationwide Insurance.

Children will get to tour the Niagara Falls Fire Department Fire Safety House to learn about creating and executing a fire safety plan. There also will be a bicycle rodeo with the Niagara County Sheriff's Department - so don't forget to bring your bicycle and helmet for this activity.

Parents can obtain a free child safety identification card for their children from New York Life Insurance, and get their car seats checked by law enforcement officials to determine if they have been properly installed.

Police K-9 demonstrations will also take place on the Power Vista traffic circle as part of the event. Children who complete a Safety Day quiz have a chance to win a gift certificate to Bert's Bikes.

Free rides on the Niagara Scenic Trolley between the Power Vista and the Gorge Discovery Center will be offered during the event, courtesy of New York State Office of Parks, Recreations and Historic Preservation.

Visitors also can enjoy the Power Vista's attractions, which include more than 50 displays and interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area's history, including unique views from the observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge. Parking and admission at the Power Vista is always free.
