Beloved musical takes center stage for eight performances

The hills at Artpark will be alive with "The Sound of Music" in July 2013 as part of the summer-long celebration of Artpark's 40th anniversary.

The classic musical was first presented at Artpark in 1977, starting the lasting tradition of major Broadway musical productions at the summertime venue.

Eight performances of "The Sound of Music" will be presented in the Mainstage Theater July 11 through 19. This classic and endearing musical is based on the book "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers," and the 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews propelled the story to become the most popular movie musical of all time. It features an unforgettable Rodgers & Hammerstein score, including "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi" and "Climb Every Mountain."

Set in the 1930s, Maria is a sweet, young postulant whose free-spirited nature isn't suited for religious life, so she is sent off to be the governess to a widowed naval captain's seven troublesome children. Maria bonds with the children over their mutual love of music and soon she manages to capture the heart of the strict captain as well.

"The Sound of Music" was the final collaboration of the award-winning duo Rodgers & Hammerstein, who are widely acknowledged as the all-time "Kings of Broadway." This heartwarming story, with a thrilling and inspirational ending, is the perfect summer theater family treat.
