Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the Accident Investigation Unit is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on Nov. 11.

Rescue personnel from the Grand Island Fire Co. responded to the scene within minutes and extricated Vanderbrook from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Sgt. Greg Kent of the Erie County Sheriff's Office said there was no report of any other vehicle or animals involved in the incident, and that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

A helicopter from MercyFlight arrived at 1:20 p.m. on standby.

The sheriff's office reports the late-morning arrest of a Grand Island man for driving while intoxicated-drugs following his one-car accident on West River Road on Grand Island.

Erie County Sheriff's Office deputies Ryan Rogers and Chris Ginnane responded to West River Road Thursday, Nov. 8, at around 10 a.m. for a reported one-car property damage accident involving the car, guardrail and mailboxes.

Upon arrival, deputies observed that the car had gone off the shoulder of the road near Staley Road and struck the guardrail, then struck a couple mailboxes. Deputies spoke with the driver, 21-year-old Christopher M. Shores of Grand Island, and upon further interview, investigation, and field sobriety tests, determined him to be intoxicated by drugs.

Shores was uninjured and subsequently arrested for DWI-drugs, reckless criminal mischief, and multiple traffic violations. He was taken to the Erie County Holding Center and held pending his arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

Shores' vehicle was towed from the scene.
