More than 2,000 Sidway Elementary School students and other fire prevention open house visitors came to Grand Island Fire Co. headquarters on Friday, Oct. 12, to learn more about their GIFC volunteers, equipment, and operational capabilities.

Onlookers were amazed to watch a simple living room couch fire erupt into a blazing inferno within 46 seconds of ignition, a stark example of the urgency in exiting a burning home. In addition to hose practice for kids, displays of emergency medical services lifesaving equipment, firefighting apparatus, the New York State Police, Erie County Sheriff's Office, and others contributed their expertise.

GIFC Fire Chief Kevin Koch made a special presentation of the 2012 Fire Prevention Commendation to the (Tony) Mastantuono Agency of the Allstate Insurance Co. for its "continuing support in the form of outreach grants, which enhance special GIFC cadet programs and other worthwhile aspects of the fire service." The Mastantuono Agency's efforts represent exceptional acts of community service, according to Koch.

Those students who completed fire safety quizzes became eligible for a french fries treat from Wendy's Restaurant. Also, lucky winners of the Ride to School in a Fire Truck drawing will soon be contacted.

Meanwhile, the GIFC Ladies Auxiliary basket raffle and cookout proved to be a resounding success.

Thanks to all those who set aside some quality time to meet with their GIFC volunteers and friends.
