October is Fire Prevention Month and volunteer firefighters in the Niagara-Wheatfield area have been busy, not only protecting the community, but holding open houses and special programs. Adams Volunteer Fire Co. on Nash Road in Wheatfield held its open house Oct. 12 with plenty for visitors to see and do.

MercyFlight landed a helicopter in the parking lot for everyone to see the inside of this life-saving machine. Adams firefighter Dan Drexelius took a close-up look at the patient care area inside the aft section of the helicopter.

Fire Prevention Month open house is also an opportunity to practice emergency rescue and firefighting. A junk car was torn apart using the extrication tools that can cut open doors and pry apart a mangled car involved in an accident. Afterward, the car was set ablaze to demonstrate how firefighters battle a car fire.
