The Island held its 11th annual Patriot Day ceremony Tuesday at the Pfc. Charles N. DeGlopper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9249.

It was 11 years ago that "the world we knew was turned upside down" said Grand Island Town Supervisor Mary Cooke, the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

Cooke noted the more than 3,000 lives lost on that day, including the 27 from Western New York who died. Their names were read during the ceremony.

"By taking a moment to reflect and remember, we show our respect and gratitude for the victims and the heroes," Cooke said. "No life lost on 9-11 was lost in vain because Americans will never forget the bravery and selfless sacrifice shown on that day."

American spirit, based on freedom and liberty is stronger than ever, she said.

The event was attended by veterans, members of the Grand Island Police, Grand Island Fire Co., and Leatherneck Veteran Riders, among others.

The ceremony concluded with a spontaneous singing of "God Bless America."
