Lewiston Public Library August programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of August.

Family Offerings

•From Aug. 1 to Aug. 20 there will be a donation box in the library's children's room with a wish list of supplies needed by the Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education Association. The list includes supplies needed to enable volunteers to continue with their mission of rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife.

•The Omnipresent Puppet Theatre presents Sleeping Beauty, Monday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m.

•Traveling Campfire with Rich Merritt, an interactive campfire storytelling adventure for the family will visit the library on Monday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m.

•The Owl Fest with Marianne from the Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education/Summer Reading program takes place Monday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. Featured will be a presentation on owls with Marianne, prize drawings for the library's end of summer reading program, a craft and lots of fun

The library reminds young readers that all tickets and reading lists need to be turned in by noon on Aug. 20

•Computer classes for the month include: computer basic, Thursday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and email basic, Thursday, Aug. 30, again from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required for all computer classes. Stop in or call the library, 716-754-4720, for details.

Clubs and More

•The Dead Beats Society will meet Friday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. in the Local History Room.

•The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 716-754-7714.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 7, and Monday, Aug. 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the library.

•Moms Book Chat, a book discussion group for moms will meet Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. Visiting will be Jeanne Treat, author of "The Dark Birthright Trilogy," who will offer a book talk about her illustrated historical fantasy series set in old Scotland.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 716-754-4144.

•Personal instructional genealogy appointments are available on Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. Call the library, 716-754-4720, for an appointment or email Michelle Kratts at [email protected].

•The Friends annual Book Sale will take place Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Red Brick School Municipal Building, North Fourth and Onondaga streets, in the gym. Sunday will feature the all day "Bag Sale" for $5 a bag; bring your own grocery bags.

On Friday, Aug. 10, a current member-only Wine and Cheese preview night will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. New members are welcome to join at the door. There will be a $5 entrance fee for each person, to help support our library.

The August meeting for the Friends of the Library will be Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 6 p.m.

Summer Story Times

•Wish Upon a Star, for ages 1 to 3, on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 10:30 a.m.

•Fantasy Fun, for ages 4-plus, on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 10:30 a.m.

•I Wish I May, for ages 1 to 3, on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m.

•Creatures of the Night, for ages 4-plus, on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 10:30 a.m.

•Night Owls, for ages 1 to 3, on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m.

•Tail Waggin' Tutors sessions will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, Aug. 9, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

•Story Hour with Mrs. Leardini meets on Thursdays, Aug. 2, 9 and 16, at 10:30 a.m.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Friday, noon to 5 p.m. The Lewiston Public Library is closed on Saturdays, through Sept. 8.
