Press release

State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, was joined Thursday by Assemblyman Steve Hawley, R-Batavia, Shelby Supervisor Merle Draper, Ridgeway Supervisor Brian Napoli and Medina Mayor Andrew Meier to announce that they were able to get the funding for the Bates Road Project restored by the New York Department of Transportation.

Toward the end of May, Draper was notified by letter that there was a change to the design phase and construction phase for Bates Road by the DOT. While initially informed that Shelby would receive $33,000 for the design phase, and $195,000 for the construction phase, the letter informed the supervisor that they would only be receiving $27,000 for the design phase and that the $195,000 known as the Marchiselli grant was no longer available. After phone calls were made to the DOT, the entirety of the funding was restored.

"I am extremely happy that we were able to get the funding restored for the Bates Road project," Maziarz said. "Shared projects between the villages and towns in the district have been extremely successful in Orleans County, and are especially important because they save the taxpayers money. It was important to me to see this money reinstated to continue these projects and to provide the safest route possible for those traveling in Orleans County. I thank the NYSDOT for their cooperation and assistance in getting this funding restored."

"The state made a promise to the people of Medina, Ridgeway and Shelby to support the reconstruction project on Bates Road, and it is only right that they honor their word," Hawley said. "The community has held state government's feet to the fire and, as a result, this crucial project will go forward as planned. I commend the citizens of these towns and my colleagues at all level of government who made their voice heard and ensured that this funding was delivered as promised."

Draper added, "The Town of Shelby is very happy the state funding for Bates Road has been restored and we appreciate the assistant we have received from the senator's office."

Napoli noted, "The Town of Ridgeway greatly appreciates the work of Senator Maziarz to reinstate the funding for the Marchiselli grant. With this, we will be able to finish the infrastructure work for the ethanol plant. The plant is a boom to our local farm economy and supplies a necessary product to the state's economy. Again, thank you Senator Maziarz."

Meier said, "The village is grateful for Senator Maziarz' assistance in restoring this funding, and we look forward to smoother roads ahead."

Portions of Bates Road travel through the towns of Shelby and Ridgeway and through the Village of Medina.
