It's time again to brush up on your gardening skills and get some ideas to help green your thumb this summer. Take the historic Village of Lewiston, add a love of gardening, and you have the seventh annual Lewiston GardenFest, sponsored by the Lewiston Garden Club. The event is Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Located along Center Street, the festival includes a free garden tour featuring the gardens of local residents, educational talks from gardening experts, and a variety of vendors offering plants, flowers and garden-related items.

"Whether you've gardened all of your life or are just getting started, the Lewiston GardenFest offers creative ideas and products to spruce up your garden, complete your plantings or to tackle larger landscaping projects," said chairwoman Barbara Landree. "Learn how to beautify your space from talking with gardeners of varying skill levels and seeing firsthand examples with a tour of our open gardens."

Several Lewiston residents will showcase their private gardens and open them up to the general public. More than 16 private gardens, varying in size and style, are located both within walking distance and also a short drive from Center Street. The Peace Garden, located behind the Little Yellow House (476 Center St.), the gardens at the Lewiston Red Brick Municipal Building (105 N. Fifth St.), and The Gardens at Oxbow (located at the corner of North Ninth and Mohawk streets) are also part of the open gardens this year. A complete listing of participating gardens will be available during the event at one of the GardenFest hospitality booths.

Interested in learning more about gardening? A "Garden Talk" is scheduled for each day of the event. On Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at The Brickyard Pub & B.B.Q. (432 Center St.), Sally Cunningham, newspaper columnist and television and radio personality, will present "Lessons from Garden Walk Gardens," to learn how to view gardens with new eyes. Jackie Albarella brings a rich background in gardening, writing and television to her presentation on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the community tent. Looking for an answer to a plant or garden problem? The Bonsai Society, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Hosta & Daylily Society, Iris Society, and Rose Society will be available to answer your gardening questions throughout the weekend.

For those who may be hesitant to create a large garden, why not test out your skills by participating in the "Container Contest" sponsored by the Lewiston Garden Club? If interested, bring your special garden in a planter, a crock, or any type of container, along with a stand for display, to the hospitality booth at Fourth and Center streets by 9 a.m. on Saturday. Be creative - even found objects make the most interesting containers (and don't forget fun accessories!). Make sure to start early so the plants are established and have time to fill out. Throughout the weekend, the public will be able to vote for their favorites. Prizes, donated by local businesses and gardens centers, will be awarded. Proceeds from GardenFest are given back to the community for beautification and scholarships.
