Press release

Tuesday, Niagara Falls School Board member and local attorney Johnny G. Destino announced his candidacy for New York State Senate. Destino will challenge long-time incumbent George Maziarz in the Sept. 13 Republican primary to represent voters in the newly configured 62nd District, which now includes the City of Niagara Falls.

"I believe Albany needs to be turned upside down in order for us to begin straightening out our priorities. First we have to remove career politicians who have long forgotten whose interests they were elected to serve," Destino said.

Prominent local developer and attorney Carl Paladino agrees and is endorsing Destino.

"George Maziarz is a 'poster child' for term limits. He has been around for a long time and his only accomplishments have been in serving special interests," Paladino said. "John illustrated his sincerity and ability in the recent election for mayor of Niagara Falls. He understands the issues in-depth, and is willing to be a single voice, if that is what is necessary, to change the status quo in Albany. He is a talented lawyer with a young spirit who has not been infected by the Albany establishment."

Destino, a lifelong conservative Republican, is a graduate of Niagara-Wheatfield High School and former resident of the Town of Niagara. He currently lives in Niagara Falls with his wife and three sons.

"Everyone tells me that this race isn't winnable; that George is too strong," Destino said. "But what use is the political power and clout George has accumulated in the Senate when the only people who benefit from his more than three decades in public office are his friends and family members?"
