The sheriff was in town Tuesday to meet Islanders and address local concerns.

Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard and Erie County Sheriff's Office brass held a meeting at Town Hall and spoke about local crime, the ECSO budget, and issues with the county jail.

Mike Licata of the Erie County Sheriff's Office said it was time for a visit in the Town Hall meeting format to "let people know what the sheriff's department is doing, so tonight is our inaugural night, and we started with Grand Island because that's District 1 for us."

"One of the problems for law enforcement is we don't have enough opportunities to interact with the people that we are under oath of office to serve. So for an opporunity like this, we are most grateful," Howard said to Town Supervisor Mary Cooke in presenting her with a certificate of appreciation.

"We're very pleased to have the sheriff in town tonight," Cooke responded.

Chief Scott Joslyn said two deputies are assigned to the Island, one on the north side and another on the south side, typical of the ECSO's seven districts.

To address one Fix Road resident's concern with what he called quality of life issues, sucha s his claim that "motorcyclists love to use (Fix Road) as a drag strip," Joslyn said, "Your quality of life issues are equally important to me as those bigger crimes, beacuse I want you to enjoy your residence here. It's your castle."

"We deter people by writing tickets. It's what we do."
