Reflecting on the 75th anniversary of 4-H

Anyone who has an interest in the diverse history of the Niagara Region is welcome to attend the Annual Congress of the Niagara County Federation of Historical Societies on Saturday, April 28, at the Sanborn Area Historical Society's Farm Museum, 2660 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn.

The theme for this year's meeting is "Reflecting on the 75th Anniversary of 4-H." Three guest speakers, who have all received the 4-H Distinguished Service Award, will present throughout the day on topics that help attendees understand Niagara County's history and participation in 4-H.

The presenters include John Hall, Susan Wendler and Linda Conlin.

Local historian and author Hall is a longtime adherent of 4-H and a member of the "Century" Hall Apple Farm. He will speak on the History of 4H. The second speaker is Wendler, who together with her husband James, has owned and operated Happy Egg Farm for more than 50 years. She received her master's degree from Michigan State University and has done graduate work at Cornell University. She will present, "Corn: Rooted in Human History." Conlin, another lifelong 4Her, is a retired family and consumer science teacher and a former Cooperative Extension agent for 4H and home economics. After lunch, she will present "The History of Food Preservation." A tour of the Sanborn Historical Society will follow.

This meeting of the history buffs will begin at 9 a.m. with registration and coffee. Federation president Becky Pittler said, "The Annual Congress is open to the public, and everyone is welcome to attend. It is not limited to members of any historical organization."

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, at the Sanborn Area Historical Society's Farm Museum. The cost of the event is $20, which includes the full day seminar, museum tour and choice of a "fair themed" lunch catered by The Sanborn Area Historical Society. Reservations are due by April 23, and may be made by calling the Niagara County History Center at 434-7433.
