Fire and Ice dinner to benefit Boy Scouts

This year, the Greater Niagara Frontier Council, Boy Scouts of America is hoping that those who have experienced the benefits of Scouting will attend its second annual Fire and Ice fundraising dinner. The event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Templeton Landing at the Erie Basin Marina.

Council President Mike Meyer says the theme of the dinner was suggested by both the setting and by typical Boy Scout activities.

"We were trying to think of something that kind of popped for us and was pertinent for Scouting," Meyer said. He noted that Boy Scouts typically spend a lot of time sitting around campfires and that they also teach cold weather survival skills and continue camping through the winter months. It is also a perfect theme for the location, with its late-winter vista of Lake Erie and its cauldrons of flame.

The council made a conscious decision to forego the traditional format of a Scouting dinner, with long speeches and heavy programming. Instead, the setup of the event encourages the attendees to mingle, to forge connections and to get to know one another.

The evening will feature an open bar. Rather than having table service or a buffet, there will be several themed food stations and hors d'oeuvres, such as beef on weck egg rolls and mini-Reubens. Templeton Landing's signature French fries with dipping sauces will be available, and the stations will feature kebabs, seared scallops and crab cakes, with bananas Foster on the dessert station.

There will also be a cake auction featuring the signature desserts of many of Western New York's best bakeries. In the past, a frou-frou cake from Lombardo's and desserts from Rich's Dessert Builder have gone on the block.

Meyer says donations are still coming in for the silent auction but that they already have gym memberships, restaurant certificates, a football autographed by many of the Buffalo Bills and a suite at a Bisons game.

Eagle Scout and injury attorney William Mattar is serving as the chair of the event for the second consecutive year.

"This major fundraising event allows Western New Yorkers to support an organization that is so instrumental to our young people," Mattar said.

Mattar is also making sure everyone returns home safely. Designated Drivers of Buffalo will be on hand to provide rides home for partygoers.

Tickets for the event are $175 per person, or $295 for a couple. For tickets, or to place a program ad or donate to the auction, call 512-6205. Tickets also can be purchased online at www.wnyscouting.org/events.
