The magical season just keeps rolling along for the Lewiston-Porter junior varsity club hockey Lancers.

The Lancers closed the regular season earlier this month with yet another win, topping Cheektowaga 6-2. The Lancers ended their season with a perfect 16-0 record and by doing so won the WNYHSCL Small School regular season title.

At its season-ending game against Cheektowaga, Lew-Port's Joe Cecconi opened with a blast off the goal post with 5:42 left in the first period.

Cheektowaga responded 19 seconds later with a goal by Anthony Cybulski with an assist by Mike Swacha. Rob Michalowski scored two minutes later for Cheektowaga with Joe Valentino getting the assist.

With five seconds remaining in the first period Mike Laurendi rifled a shot from the left point with Robert DiBacco assisting to end the period at 2-2. Lew-Port's Scott Meogrossi scored his first of two second-period goals with 10:57 left in the second with DiBacco and Pasha Kovtunov assisting. His second goal came four minutes later with Kovtunov and Justin Nichols credited with the helpers.

Danny Hogan scored 37 seconds into the third period on a bullet pass from Cecconi and Joe DeMunda closed the scoring with an unassisted goal.

Goalie Callum Knight stopped 19 shots in a tough checking game.

Including their win at the earlier Cheektowaga Christmas tournament, the JV Lancers finished the regular season at 23-0.

The Lancers opened as the first seed this week, with games against Depew on Feb. 18 and Feb. 22.

In the Feb. 18 away contest it was 6-4, Lew-Port.

Matt Schiavi scored three goals to lead Lew-Port to a win over Depew in game one of a best-of-three semifinal playoff series. DeMunda added a goal and two assists, while Hogan and Mike Mokhiber chipped in with one goal each. Chris Harvey dished off three assists, while Kovtunov had two helpers.

Knight earned the win in goal as Lew-Port played the game with just three defensemen.

On Feb. 22 at Hyde Park, the Lancers dominated in a 9-1 win. As a result, the Lancers have earned a trip to Saturday's WNYHSCL small school championship game.

Leading the way for the Lancers was Cecconi, scoring five goals and dishing off three assists. Mokhiber added two goals and an assist while DeMunda had a goal and an assist.

Sean Richardson added a single tally with a blast from the left point. Schiavi, Hogan and Harvey added single assists.

Lew-Port goalie Ryan Lasky's bid for a shutout was broken when Mitch Smosna scored late in the second period for Depew.

With the wins over Depew Lew-Port moves to 25-0 in games played this season.

Lew-Port will meet Grand Island in the small school championship game to be played Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Northtowns Hockey Arena beginning at 3 p.m.

The winner will advance to the New York state championships to be played in Ithaca, beginning Friday, March 2.
