Winter street hockey planned for Vets Park

The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department has announced the Winter Fest/Pond Hockey tournament originally scheduled for Feb. 18 and 19 has been postponed due to ground and ice conditions. Those who had an interest in the pond hockey event are asked to call the recreation office at 773-9680. The office will keep information for the planning of a future event.

In place of the pond hockey there will be a street hockey tournament for youths ages 6 to 14 years old on Feb. 21, 22 and 23 (school winter break). This event will be conducted at Veterans Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Play as a team or individual, helmets and protective equipment are required. Bring your own stick, sneakers or boots, no goalies used.

Age group break down: 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 14 years. Games start at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Park parking lots.

New Programs in February

Enjoy LEGOs? The Recreation Department is starting a LEGO Club for youths 7 to 12 years old on Saturdays starting Feb. 18. Activities will be held at the Nike Base from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with supervision provided by recreation staff. Youths are encouraged to bring their LEGO sets to share with others - all sets returned.

Dates for the LEGO club will be Feb. 18, 25, March 3, 10, 17, 24. There is no fee, but a one-time registration. Donations of LEGO pieces and/or sets are welcomed. Donations can be delivered to the Nike Base Recreation office or at the drop box in Town Hall.

Enjoy arts and crafts, or table games? The Recreation Department will continue its arts and crafts program on Saturday mornings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Feb. 18. Open to youths 8 to 12 years old, the activities include crafts, table games and card games. All activities will be conducted at the Nike Base, 3278 Whitehaven Road, and are supervised by recreation staff. The event takes place Saturdays, Feb. 18, 25, March 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Family Swim at the Grand Island High School pool is under way for Sundays, noon to 3 p.m. Feb 12, March 4, 11, 18, 25 and April 1. There are no fees, but children under 16 must have a parent in attendance. Lifeguards will be on duty.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, Reality Café will host "A Night at the Bowling Alley" from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Meet at Mallwitz's Island Lanes for a night of bowling. An $8 cost includes two games, shoe rental, pizza and pop. This event is for middle-schoolers only. Permission slips are to be signed by parents and will be available at the bowling alley that night.
