Following the Town of Lewiston's closure of the ice rink at Academy Park, the Village of Lewiston Board wants to be included in future discussions pertaining to the outdoor attraction.

The Center Street ice rink's trial period concluded at the end of January. Town workers have removed the warming tent and are tearing the rink down. Village of Lewiston Deputy Mayor Bruce Sutherland said he spoke with Town Parks and Recreation Director Mike Dashineau.

"For this coming year, they'll be looking for sponsors, which will help keep it open longer and maybe even make it a little bit larger," Sutherland said. "I told him that we in the village would really want to partner with him a little more heavily on the ice rink and where they're going to put things. They want to upgrade the electrical portion of that. So we want to become a part of that (conversation). ... Mike Dashineau assured me that we'd be welcome at their recreation department meetings to have a say and be a part of it."

Sutherland and Trustee Vic Eydt plan to attend upcoming Town of Lewiston Recreation Department meetings.

"We're all looking for what's best for the community," Mayor Terry Collesano said.

He noted the town would clean up Academy Park following the rink takedown.

The Town of Lewiston received $134,000 in Greenway money for an ice rink and warming tent at Academy Park. Officials rented the equipment as part of a possible rent-to-own agreement.
