On Friday, Jan. 27, the Lewiston DARE Program graduated five fifth-grade classes at the Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center. DARE, or, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is taught by Lewiston Police officers Scott Stafford and John Penzotti in many Lewiston schools. DARE is taught by the LPD officers at Lewiston-Porter, the Tuscarora School, St. Peter's and Stella Niagara.

According to LPD Police Chief Chris Salada, DARE targets students in fifth grade before they are exposed to the drug scene, and it gives them the fundamental information that will help them for the rest of their lives. The program educates about drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, peer pressure, self-esteem and much, much more.

"Each child writes an essay on what they have learned in DARE class and it is amazing what they absorb," says Salada. "These classes also get a special visit from our Lewiston Police drug detecting K9, Radar."
